FRIED CABBAGE AND NOODLES
1 head of cabbage
1 box of elbow noodles
butter

Cut up head of cabbage and saute in butter in skillet. Reduce heat and continue to cook slowly. Meanwhile, in a large pot of salted boiling water, prepare 1 box of elbow macaroni according to package directions.

Once noodles are done and the cabbage is soft, drain the noodles and mix with the buttered cabbage.

Cover and let simmer on low for about 15 minutes.

This is a very old recipe that tastes fantastic. You can almost eat the whole thing yourself. Enjoy!!!

I continue to do this recipe - with so many variations. Today am going to do - with couple garlic cloves - smoked neck bones - plus couple splashes of balsamic. Have Hush Puppy muffins on the side... Love the different ways posted.

This sounds yummy but I have made it with egg noodles and then added browned crumbled hamburger and even some onion. I cook my cabbage in stainless steel and use a little chicken broth to cook the cabbage. Works great!

Fantastic recipe. Am going to fix today - but: add one pack of Goya Ham flavored bouillon (in Mexican aisle)... (flavor is equal to 1/4 lb. of ham)... instead of adding water as you simmer down... use beef broth instead. Yum!

Loved it, family loved it! Easy to make! Didn't need the bacon really. I did add a half of a medium chopped onion. I think I used about a half cube of butter though... It was getting dry... Needed to add a bit of water after i put in the noodles or I only used half head of cabbage which could have made dry. This is a fantastic recipe, surprise I never heard of it. We don't have many Eastern Europeans in the Northwest. Originally was Native American, Scandinavians and Italian Immigrants. Thanks for such a great and easy recipe!

I like to fry bacon and then put the cabbage in the bacon grease and I also fry a onion. Add my bowtie noodles a little garlic. And some sugar and it is really good.

Cook till tender, 1 large head of cabbage. Cook 1/2 bag of your favorite noodles till tender. Drain cabbage and noodles set aside.. Cook 3 medium onions (sliced) until translucent in butter in microwave... Fry 1/2 lb of bacon, place cabbage, noodles and onions in large bowl. Add crumbled crisp bacon along with hot bacon grease, stir gently and enjoy.... Don't forget to add a wee bit of salt to cabbage and noodles!

I agree this is a wonderful dish, can use noodles as well as macaroni. Sometimes add fresh ground sausage but the cabbage and noodles is great all by itself.

 Colleen (Ohio) replies:
My Grandma too would make this, I swear she didn't use noodles at all though, just delicious buttery cabbage. I have only made it with egg noodles, but I made it too much and now cabbage isn't allowed through the door!

Good basic recipe. I saute onion and add fresh cracked pepper, caraway seed and a bay leaf. Also, to make this a full meal, I boil up a small smoked cottage ham and then shred it and add it to the cabbage. I also like to toss the (fully cooked and drained) noodles in and let them caramelize a bit in the butter. AWESOME!!!
