1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 tbsp. water
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2/3 cup small spicy gumdrops, finely cut

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Melt margarine in a saucepan. Remove from heat. Add sugars and water. Blend. Stir in flour and baking powder. Add egg and vanilla. Beat well. Add gumdrops and stir lightly to combine. Pour into greased 9x9-inch pan.

Bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes. Do not overbake. Cool in pan.

Cut into bars at serving time.

SAUCEPAN CORN FLAKES BARS:

Use 4 cup shredded coconut and 1 cup corn flakes instead of gumdrops.

Makes 18 (1x3-inch) bars.
