ENGLISH TOFFEE COOKIES 
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. bring sugar
1/2 c. white sugar
1 egg yolk, beaten
2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
Vanilla, if desired

Cream butter, shortening, brown sugar, and white sugar together and add egg yolk. Sift in flour, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla. Pat down smooth on cookie sheet and brush with slightly beaten white of egg. Sprinkle chopped nuts on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Cut into 48 squares while warm. (Can be frozen.) Serves 48.
