ROMAN APPLE CAKE 
1 c. sugar
1 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. milk
2 c. sliced apples
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla

TOPPING:

1 tbsp. butter
1 tbsp. flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Sift together dry ingredients. Add remaining ingredients, folding in chopped or sliced apples, last. Pour into oblong pan. Top with topping. Mix topping all together and sprinkle over cake. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
