GRANULATED SUGAR FROSTING
1/2 c. milk
3 tbsp. flour
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/4 c. butter
1/4 c. vegetable shortening
1 tsp. vanilla extract (optional)

Cook milk and flour over low heat until very thick. Let cool.

Cream together sugar, butter and shortening. Add milk and flour mixture and beat until whipped cream consistency. Add vanilla.

Will suit those who like a "too sweet" frosting and may not have confectioners' sugar on hand.

Granulated Sugar Frosting

We made this and I added a packet of True Orange extract. We put it on rolls to make orange rolls. I was quite surprised. It was creamy and light. It was not gritty like a lot of the granulated frostings I've tried. This is definitely a great alternative if you don't have powdered sugar around.

 Traci (Texas) says:
This recipe was good for making frosting for small children to place on cupcakes for fun. The frosting tasted good and you could not taste the granulated sugar "crunchiness." I could not get the frosting to fluff, so it kinda look like baby oatmeal, not really mixed up. I think you really need to use confectioners' sugar to have the fluffy frosting.

Traci definitely did something wrong if her frosting was lumpy. Don't blame the recipe! It was great, I got the frosting very light and fluffy with no crunchy feel at all.

I had the same trouble as Traci. The consistency is smooth and light but it looks like it's crunchy-a lot like baby oatmeal though it has perfect texture. I don't think the vanilla (or some sort of flavoring) is optional, without flavoring it mostly just tastes like flour. Overall it's okay for a base coat or filling but as for looks, I wouldn't recommend it.

This is a great frosting and not nearly as sweet as a confectionary one remember to cook the flour and milk Enough stir constantly. Also beat with electric mixer or beaters while it is hot to make it smooth.

My mother-in-law gave me this same recipe 40 years ago. Early on, I would notice the icing would look fluffy, but have time bits of particles in it, no matter how much I beat the icing. I finally realized that if I did not overcook the flour and milk recipe, the icing would have a smooth, fluffy texture.

I am a Freshman in high school and I needed a quick, delicious, and easy way to make some frosting without confectioners sugar; This is absolutely perfect! My dad and I constantly stole a little bit at a time, which ended up at one finger too much! Very good and just perfect for a quick-fix. :)

This tastes very fatty...but it's good. To add flavor and color to block the taste of the fat, chop up 3 strawberries and food process them with a teaspoon of water until they become a thick liquid. Then pour into frosting while mixing it.

Well I must say this turned out better then I thought. I add fresh strawberries and it tastes wonderful. I surprised myself. Didn't take long at all. Now I have icing for my huge strawberry cupcakes. Thanks a bunch.

I used pancake mix instead of flour and margarine instead of butter. Didn't have any vanilla and it turned out great.
