JAM FILLED COOKIES 
1 c. granulated sugar
1 c. packed brown sugar
1 c. shortening
2 eggs
1/4 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
3 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. ground nutmeg
Strawberry jam

In large bowl cream sugars and shortening. Add eggs, buttermilk and vanilla; beat well. Stir together flour, baking powder, baking soda, nutmeg and 1 teaspoon salt; stir into creamed mixture. Cover and chill.

On lightly floured surface roll dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutter into 1 1/2 inch rounds. Place 1 teaspoon jam on each of half of the rounds; top with remaining rounds. Lightly seal edges with fork. With knife cut crisscross slits in tops of cookies. Bake at 350 degrees until golden, 10-15 minutes. Makes 5 dozen cookies.
