Unleavened Bread for Holy Communion

 Bob Johnson (Virginia) says:
Bread with baking soda or baking powder or yeast is not considered unleavened.

 Ann (Maryland) says:
Baking soda is a leavening agent, so this recipe is NOT unleavened bread. Everything else is fine just leave out the baking soda.

I made this bread for Maundy Thursday communion. Our pastor said it was the "best communion bread we've ever had" and asked me to make it again for Easter Sunday. The cross on it makes a nice presentation. When it comes out of the oven it looks just like a giant chocolate chip cookie (same color but without the chips!) My daughter said it tastes like her favorite cornbread because it's sweet and has a nice texture from the wheat flour. This bread is the quickest, easiest bread you will ever make!

Terrific recipe. And for the comments mentioning leaving out baking soda because it's a leavening agent... The only leavening agent that should be left out is YEAST. Too many people stretch the scripture with imagination when it comes to leavening agents when yeast is the only leavening ingredient mentioned. Eggs, milk, and any combination of acid base, including many other commonly used ingredients, are also leavening agents. Enjoy this bread!

 Harriet Smith (North Carolina) says:
"Unleavened" means different things to different people. Some define it as not having any agent that would cause rising -- yeast or baking powder, etc. Some define it as not using any kind of starter like sourdough. Some just mean without yeast. Please recognize that there are different definitions.

So many opinions, which is right to be Kosher. Why are we making this bread? To honor Christ or someone? I just want to know how to make it and honor Jesus.

 Dave (North Dakota) says:
"So many opinions...I just want to know how to make it and honor Jesus." Honoring Jesus includes following His instructions for worship. The Bible clearly states that we are to use unleavened bread for the Lord's Supper on the first day of the week, and the first communion was done on the Passover, using the unleavened bread of the Passover. Whether or not baking soda was available at the time, it is a leavening agent, and the words used in the Bible are 'unleavened bread'. It is perspicuous!

I thought I would bake this bread for communion in morning because I am steward for communion. But it is so hard I know the elderly people could never chew it.

 Karen (Oregon) says:
It's suppose to be *flat* bread which depicts the absence of sin. A little leaven leavens the whole lump. However, no matter how much baking soda you use, it's not going to spread like yeast. But the principle should be that it is *flat* bread which represents being free from sin. So I'd leave it out, even if technically baking soda is not a leaven on the same par as yeast.

Ok even eggs can be used as a leavening agent. SO I guess it is up to the individual or their church. If the pastor says it is ok then it is ok. If he says no then it is not ok. We do not take communion for each other. Let's not direct cooking for each other. Not only is this good for communion but it is also good for pizza also.

The body of Jesus is unleavened. It is without baking soda nor yeast.

 Adja-Koadade Mokpokpo (Egypt) says:
The LORD JESUS comprises the BODY mixed with SALT,OIL, and WATER. The BLOOD was separated for an unified action.
Floor represents the BODY.
SALT represents SALT in the body.
OIL represents OIL in the body.
WATER represents WATER in the body.
These four (4) ingredients are mixed together and baked as the body of CHRIST for Communion.
