APPLE ROLL 
Pastry:

1 1/2 c. self-rising flour
3 tbsp. shortening
enough milk to moisten flour (until it will be stiff)

Step 1:

1 stick butter
1 1/4 c. white sugar
2 c. water
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Step 2:

3 1/2 c. apples, chopped
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. brown sugar

Pastry: Combine pastry ingredients and chill.

Step 1: Heat oven to 350°F. In 9 x 9-inch pan, add butter, water, white sugar and vanilla. Let this mixture get hot and stir occasionally.

Step 2: Roll pastry into a large circle. Sprinkle with mixture of apples, brown sugar and cinnamon. Roll this up as you would a jelly roll. Cut into 1 1/2-inch slices and drop into hot mixture. Cool real slow until golden brown or about 1 hour. Serve warm or with ice cream.
