Hearty Whole Wheat Waffles

Great recipe--definitely a keeper. I find that most waffle recipes call for whipped egg whites and my family wants them quicker! They were nice and thick--felt like I was eating something, not just air!

I love the recipe and actually substitute honey for the sugar and add about 2 tsp vanilla.

I made these sugar and fat-free by eliminating the sugar and substituting the oil with 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce. To die for!

Have made this recipe several times and it is fabulous, sometimes I add a little vanilla powder for an extra treat. These are best right out of the waffle iron.

Fantastic waffles... Wasn't even expecting them to be so sweet, but were sooo tasty. I even made them with 1/4 wheat flour and still great! Thanks for sharing this recipe.

Great recipe in deed! I only put in 1 cup of Milk and forgot the 1/3 cup of butter/oil all together, and my wife still thought they tasted great (I also just made pancakes with the batter)!

These waffles are quite tasty. One recommendation for the rare people who grind their own wheat, though: use hard wheat, as opposed to soft wheat. Or at least a mixture. The first two times I made these I used some leftover wheat that had already been ground, and I believe it was a mixture of the two, but more hard (white) wheat. The next couple of times I made them, I used soft white wheat and the batter was too thin. The waffles didn't rise up to meat the top of the waffle iron. I just made them with hard white wheat again, and they came out great!

Can I make this batter a day ahead? I'm a little strapped for time in the morning.

Very good recipe, its one of the only whole wheat things my kids will eat. I used only one tablespoon of sugar and it worked fine. Put some fresh fruit on them and it tasted great!

This was my first try at eating and making whole wheat waffles. This recipe was delicious. I did read other comments and adjusted the recipe based on those. I used honey instead of sugar, added vanilla and used apple sauce instead of oil/butter. I could not tell that I was eating a whole wheat waffle. I froze the leftover cooked ones and plan on popping them in the toaster oven for breakfast. YUMMY!!!

I'm not sure what happened given the number of positive reviews here, but these were the least successful waffles I have ever made. I decided to try them because I couldn't find my usual recipe, but things didn't work out quite right - the batter was far too runny and they failed to rise at all. When they had cooked long enough to be "done" they were starting to overbrown on top but were still mushy in the middle. I could hardly remove them from the iron (even though I had greased it first) - they pulled apart when I tried to take them out. After doubling the amount of baking powder and adding an egg, they began to puff up more and achieved a lovely, light texture (however, the extra powder threw off the taste a bit), but as-is the recipe did not work for me at all. I cut the sugar a bit and also added a little bit of cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg to give them a little more spice.

I made these waffles and they turned out great. They were delicious. I added chopped walnut in the batter and dusted them with powered sugar. Yummy! It was a big hit with the family, thanks for posting.
