Its great. I use fresh apples. Sprinkle sugar, cinnamon and add sliced almonds. I use half came mix as well. Everyone loves it.

I have made this cake for years, it is wonderful, I also make it with Chocolate cake and Cherry Pie filling, or Pineapples and yellow cake. Use your imagination the recipes are endless.

Being diabetic, I made this recipe with 2 cans of sugar-free apple pie filling and the Pillsbury Moist Supreme sugar-free yellow cake mix. I also added cinnamon to the layer of apples and reduced the butter with good results. I shredded one stick of butter on top and then sliced thin pats from 1/2 stick of butter to fill in the gaps. It was awesome! My friends who love desserts really like the lower calories.

I buttered the pan first, so that the butter is all through the cake. I also used spice cake mix instead of the yellow. Gives it a much better flavor! Serve it hot with either vanilla ice cream or cool whip...AWESOME!!!!

I have used this recipe for years. It is great with peaches substituted for apple pie filling as well. I always sprinkle the top with a generous helping of chopped pecans when making the apple dump cake. I add them toward the end--about the last 15 minutes. Always a winner at my house!

This is in the oven right now and the house smells so good! I use fresh apples instead of pie filling ~ 5 large apples, peeled and chopped into 1 inch cubes; mix with 1/3 cup apple juice, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 tbsp cinnamon. Top with the cake mix and butter and bake as the recipe directs. YUM!! I recently tried substituting the cake mix with an Oatmeal Cookie mix. It was good, but not as good as the cake mix. It doesn't matter what kind of fruit you use with this recipe - it's always delicious!!

I mix together some oatmeal, brown sugar and melted butter and sprinkle the crumbled mixture on top. Gives it a apple crisp taste. There's never any left when I take this to family gatherings.

I put my own topping on it and it sets it off. I use:

1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3 tbsp. butter

Mix until its well blended and crumbly. Sprinkle on top.

This is so easy and delicious. I have used different pie fillings. so good to experiment.
Would it be okay to use a gluten free cake mix?

Made this for years, really good with a gingerbread cake mix instead of yellow or spice cake mix. Can use apple sauce with some cinnamon and nutmeg added instead of apple pie filling for something different. The Girl Scouts call that variation Sunshine Pudding.

I love this, I made it and put some in the freezer. I stays good in the freezer. I made it with Yellow cake mix but am going to try it with Spice cake mix the next time.

 Ernie (New Jersey) says:
This is my first dump cake but noted the butter does not spread over the entire cake as suggested by equal speced pats of butter. Any suggestions or does anyone have the same problem?

 Linda (Florida) says:
@ Ernie (New Jersey), Melt the butter and drizzle it over cake mix.
