1/2 c. water 2 tbsp. brown sugar, packed 1 egg, slightly beaten 2 c. flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt 2 tbsp. butter Oil Granulated sugar and ground cinnamon or honey Heat water and brown sugar to boiling in 1 quart saucepan, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 2 minutes. Cool. Stir in egg. Mix flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in egg mixture until dough forms. Turn onto lightly floured surface. Knead until elastic, about 5 minutes. Shape dough into roll, about 20 inches long. Cover and let rest 1 hour. Heat oil (1 inch) to 365 degrees in 4 quart Dutch oven. Cut dough into 1 inch slices. Roll each slice into 5 inch circle on lightly floured surface. Fry circles, turning once, until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Drain. Sprinkle with granulated sugar and cinnamon, or serve with honey. |
