GRANDMA'S CARAMEL COOKIES 
3 1/2 c. Pillsbury Best all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 c. butter, softened
1/3 c. evaporated milk
1/2 c. sugar (for sprinkling)
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla extract

Oven 400 degrees. 66 to 72 cookies.

In large mixer bowl, combine all ingredients, except granulated sugar. Blend well. Chill dough for easier handling. Roll out half at a time on floured surface to 1/8 inch thick. Cut into rounds with a 2 1/2 inch cutter. Place on ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 400 degrees for about 8 to 10 minutes or until light golden brown.
