OLD FASHIONED SUGAR AND SPICE COOKIES | |
2 1/4 c. shortening 3 c. sugar 6 c. flour 6 tsp. baking soda 3/4 tsp. salt 3 eggs, beaten 3/4 c. molasses 3 tsp. cinnamon 2 1/4 tsp. ground cloves 2 1/4 tsp. ginger Confectioners' sugar (used for shaking/dipping baked cookies) Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and molasses; beat well. Sift together flour, soda, salt and spices. Gradually stir into creamed mixture. Form dough into 1 inch balls placed 2 inches apart onto lightly greased baking sheets. If dough is too sticky to form balls, stir up to 1/4 cup additional flour. Bake in 375 degree oven for 8 to 12 minutes until cookies are medium dark brown throughout, not just edges. Remove baked cookies from baking sheet immediately. Gently shake several warm cookies at a time in a small bag of confectioners sugar. Makes 12 to 14 dozen cookies. |
