WORM DIRT CAKE
This popular "novelty" cake is a hit at children's parties, especially around Halloween. You'll receive many appreciative compliments from your guests such as "Ewww, that's gross!"

It really resembles a pudding more than it does a conventional cake. If you serve it as an everyday family dessert, rather than as a fun decorative element, it's possible that your family may not understand it!

1 to 1 1/4 lb. pkg. Oreo cookies
1 (8 oz.) pkg. cream cheese
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
3 cups milk
1 (12 oz.) tub Cool Whip (can use chocolate)
2 (3 1/2 oz.) pkg. instant vanilla or chocolate pudding
1/2 tsp. vanilla
4 gummy worms and/or other critters

Crush Oreos. Put 1/3 of the crushed Oreos into a new, clean flower pot. Set aside.

Mix butter, cream cheese and sugar and vanilla together. Set aside.

Combine milk and pudding mix. Fold Cool Whip into the pudding.

Fold together pudding mixture and butter-cream cheese mixture.

Layer this mixture (about 1/3 of it) onto the crumbled cookies in the pot. Next, add another layer of the pudding mixture, then another layer of cookie crumbs, continuing until all ingredients are used.

As you're layering the ingredients, decoratively place several gummy worms and critters in the "soil" so they will be seen emerging. If you have a toy (clean) garden trowel, a plastic daisy, or some edible flowers, these can also be used creatively to embellish the presentation.

Chill in refrigerator for 3 to 4 hours before serving.

I was asked to make the dirt cake for thanksgiving dessert, however I make cups instead and to make it a little more festive I am going to put the mixture into two separate bowls and add food coloring. Yellow to one and orange to the other. Hope it will add some fun to this yummy dessert!

My son's class is having a "pumpkin celebration" instead of a "halloween party".....um, yea, so anyway, I am making some really cute pumpkin cupcakes, but I'm thinking I will also make a batch of this in a 9x13 dish, pipe some green frosting to look like vines/stems and add some of the candy pumpkins to create a "pumpkin patch!"

I doubled the recipe and made both the vanilla pudding mixure and also a chocolate pudding mixture which I alternated between crushed oreo layers. I put gummy worms on top and some candy bugs. It was so popular with the party I took it to the whole thing was gone in 5 minutes flat. People raved - it was wonderful!

I made this with a toy backhoe and bulldozer on top. I filled the machines' buckets with dirt and placed toy workmen and signs to make construction work scene. I also used speckled jellie beans as boulders; some gourmet jellie bellies are just the right color. My 3 yr old loved it!

There are actually crushed up oreo's you can buy, saves time, and you wouldnt have a problem with everything sticking together.

I plan on making the dirt cake, and putting in in a large Tonka dump truck!! I will line it with saran wrap. I have worms and slugs for extra fun. I also bought the construction cake toppers from a local bakery. I can't wait to see how it looks!!

I made this for my sisters' halloween party years ago. I covered the gummy worms with the crushed oreos and had them coming out of the dirt top. When I delivered it to her (complete with a spider plant in the dirt, which was in a plastic bag that you could not see) I told her I made it for a centerpiece for her party. Then I proceeded to "notice" the worm and remarked, "Oh dear a worm" which I took out and ate right in front of her. She about fainted! It was a great trick!!!

I make this for my friends who are turning 50, using gummy worms, and get "Older Than Dirt" plates and napkins, etc. They love it! and it tastes good too! I make it in a throw away pan, setting it in a toy wheelbarrow, and serve it with a toy trowel.

This year for Halloween, I threw in a few (washed) plastic skulls and bones. The kids loved finding them! I also used the oreos as headstones.
