QUEEN ELIZABETH CAKE 
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter
1 beaten egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. nuts
1 c. boiling water
1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda

Pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 cup chopped dates. Add 1 teaspoon baking soda and let stand. Cream sugar and butter. Add egg and vanilla. Beat well. Blend in flour, baking powder and salt. Add nuts and then add to date mixture. Bake 35 minutes in 13 x 9 inch pan at 350 degrees.
