Pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 cup chopped dates and 1 teaspoon baking soda.

Let stand while the following is mixed in usual manner.

1 c. sugar
1/4 c. butter
1 beaten egg
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/2 c. nuts

Add all above mixture together and bake 35 minutes in moderate oven 350 degrees in 9 x 12 pan.

ICING:

5 tbsp. brown sugar
5 tbsp. cream
2 tbsp. butter

Boil together for three minutes and spread on cake; sprinkle with nuts or coconut.
