Follow instructions on box for your favorite white layer cake mix; but just before mixing, stir in 3 tablespoons orange Jello. (Strawberry, lemon and lime are great also.) Mix and bake according to directions.
Frosting is made as follows: In the top of double boiler, mix the remaining Jello (from a small package) with 1/4 cup egg whites, 1 cup sugar, 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar, and 1/4 cup water. Place over boiling water and beat with electric mixer on high speed until frosting holds stiff peaks.
Remove from over boiling water and beat 1 minute longer. Spread between layers and on top and sides of cake. Do not cover tightly and do not refrigerate or this frosting may not hold up.
This makes a beautiful "birthday" cake--one my children requested for many years.
