IRISH SODA BREAD | |
1/2 cup sifted white all purpose flour 1 1/2 cups whole wheat or white whole wheat flour (unsifted) 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar 1 tsp. granulated sugar 3/4 cup buttermilk Preheat oven to 400°F for at least 15 minutes before baking. In a bowl, combine all dry ingredients by whisking together. Make a well in the center of the flour and pour in the buttermilk slowly, while mixing to form a soft dough. If dough is a little bit dry, add a small amount more buttermilk. On a lightly floured work surface, knead dough about 10 times and form into a round loaf. Cut a deep cross on the top surface to allow for expansion. Bake for 50-60 minutes in a 400°F (preheated) oven. If you have any leftover the following day, it can be sliced and toasted or made into wonderful French toast. Submitted by: CM |
