PICNIC CAKE 
1 c. cut-up dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 c. hot water
1/2 c. butter
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 c. chocolate chips
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. chopped nuts (optional)

Combine dates with 1 teaspoon baking soda and water. Let stand until cool. Cream butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar. Add egg, one at a time, beat after each addition. Sift dry ingredients, then add to egg mixture. With egg mixture, beat in cooled date mixture. Pour into 9x13 inch greased pan.

In separate bowl, mix chocolate chips, remaining sugar and nuts. Sprinkle over the batter in pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 40-45 minutes.
