WHITE BREAD 
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1/4 c. warm water
2 tbsp. sugar
2 c. milk or water
1 tbsp. melted butter or shortening
2 tbsp. salt

Mix first 3 ingredients well and set aside. Scald milk or water. Cool until lukewarm. Add shortening and salt.

Add yeast mixture. Add 5-3/4 to 6-1/4 cups flour. Knead until smooth. Let rise 2 hours or until double in size. Punch down. Put into 2 loaf pans. Let rise again.

Bake at 375°F for 45-60 minutes. Take out of oven and butter tops of loaves.
