HOMEMADE WHITE BREAD | |
1 pkg. yeast 1/2 c. warm water 1 tbsp. sugar Combine and let stand in warm place until foamy. Peel and cube 1 medium potato. Cover with water and boil until done. Drain, reserving water, and mash well. Add to hot potatoes: 1/2 c. sugar 1 tbsp. salt Combine potato water with plain water to make 2 1/2 cups of lukewarm liquid. Add mashed potato mixture, then combine the liquid in a large mixing bowl with the yeast. Measure 4 cups of all purpose flour and add to the liquid. Beat with electric mixer until well blended. Add 6-8 cups additional flour and stir with a wooden spoon. Turn out on a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes. Work in more flour as necessary to keep dough from sticking to surface. When finished, dough will be slightly sticky. Grease outside of dough and let raise until double in bulk. Divide into 3 sections and place in loaf pans. Let raise in warm place until double. Preheat oven at 400 degrees and bake for 10 minutes then reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake another 20 minutes or until well browned. |
