HAMBURGER VEGETABLE CHOWDER 
2 tbsp. Crisco
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. water
3/4 lb. ground beef
1/4 c. barley
1/2 c. chopped carrots
1/2 c. chopped celery
1 1/2 c. tomatoes
1 c. diced potatoes
1 med. diced onion
1/2 tsp. pepper

Soak barley - 1 1/2 hours before. Brown meat in Crisco with onions. Add tomatoes, carrots, celery, salt, pepper, barley and water. Add potatoes last. Cook 1 hour. Very good - one pot meal.

I use tomato soup as substitute for tomatoes.
