SWEET CHUNK PICKLES 
2 gal. sliced cucumbers

1 pint pickling salt dissolved in 1 gallon boiling water (brine). Place cucumbers in crock jar and pour boiling salt and water mixture over cucumbers. Let stand one week, stirring everyday. After one week drain of brine and pour one gallon boiling water over cucumbers. Let stand 24 hours. Then remove from jar and wash cucumbers. Put back in jar. Mix 3 tablespoons powdered alum in 1 gallon boiling water, pour over cucumbers. Let stand 24 hours. Pour off alum mixture. Mix 1 gallon vinegar, 8 cups sugar, 1/2 box pickling spices tied in gauze bag, and pour all over cucumbers. Let stand 24 hours. Drain off vinegar and add 1 cup or more sugar for 3 days. Boil same vinegar mixture each day. The fourth day pack cucumbers in jars. Remove spice bag, boil same vinegar mixture and pour over cucumbers. Seal jars. Makes about 12 pints.
