BREAD: 1/2 c. milk 1/2 c. water 3 tbsp. butter 3 tbsp. sugar 1 1/2 tsp. salt 1 pkg. dry yeast 2 1/2 c. flour 1 egg FILLING: 1/4 c. soft butter 3/4 c. brown sugar 1/4 c. sugar 1 egg 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/4 tsp. lemon juice 1/4 tsp. maple flavoring 2 c. ground nuts 1/4 c. milk Scald milk, cool by adding water, then add butter, sugar and salt. Mix yeast to 1 cup flour and then to above mixture. Add egg and mix well. Add rest of flour and mix with fork by hand until smooth. Cover and let stand for 15 minutes. Cut batter in half. Roll out dough 1/4 inch thick and spread on half the filling. Roll up to form leaves and pinch edges together. (Looks like a jelly roll with edges together). Let rise in warm place for 1 hour and 11 minutes. Brush with beaten egg. Brush with shortening while still warm. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. |
