BUCKEYE (OHIO COOKIE)
Made after the eye of the deer.

2 lbs. creamy peanut butter
1 lb. butter
3 lbs. 10x powdered sugar
12 oz. bag milk chocolate chocolate chips
1/2 bar paraffin (edible wax) shaving (shredded)

Mix (blend) peanut butter, butter and sugar (with hands is best) until creamy and smooth. Form balls about the size of a nickel or quarter. Lay on tray, put toothpicks in each and put trays in freezer; about 2 hours.

Put milk chocolate and paraffin in double broiler, stay with it and stir until smooth. Remove small amount of balls at a time from freezer. Dip balls 3/4 into chocolate and sit on wax paper, wait until hard and cool; take out toothpick and smooth over hole with finger. Store in cool place and layer in tin with waxpaper between each layer.

A buckeye is NOT named after the eye of the deer(buck). It is named after the actual Buckeye tree. The Buckeye Candy resembles the Buckeye nut, hence the name Buckeye. :) I'm an Ohio Buckeye myself and I think all other Ohioans would say the same thing!

Instead of covering the toothpick hole with your finger, you can drip a small drop of chocolate over it, giving it a target look.

I love buckeyes! I am from Ohio as well and this is the best treat ever! I have a buckeye tree in my yard... The real buckeyes don't taste all that great lol!

I've made these for years and given them as Christmas gifts, EVERYONE loves them. My son and DL and I get together one day before Christmas and do all of our making and baking. It's gotten to be a Christmas tradition.
