DATE FILLED BARS 
3/4 c. Crisco
1 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 c. quick oats
1 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. pitted dates, chopped
3/4 c. water
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. nuts, chopped

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix shortening, flour, oats, brown sugar, and baking powder. Press half of mixture into a 9 x 13 x 2 inch pan. Cook sugar, water, dates and vanilla until thick. Add nuts. Spread filling over mixture in pan. Top with remaining crumbs. Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes. Cut in squares.
