OLD FASHIONED DEVIL'S FOOD CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening (or 1 stick butter), room temp.
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 sq. chocolate
2 scant tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. buttermilk
2 c. flour
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream together until light and fluffy shortening and sugar. Add eggs and beat until smooth. Melt chocolate and add to mixture. Stir soda into buttermilk. Add flour and milk alternately 1/2 cup at a time, beginning and ending with flour. Beat lightly until smooth after each addition. Do not overbeat, do not use electric mixer. Add salt and vanilla. Bake at 350 degrees until center springs back when touched lightly with finger. Yield: 2 (9 inch) layers or 9x13 pan.
