BASIC ROLL DOUGH 
3 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1 pkg. active dry yeast
1 1/4 c. milk
1/4 c. sugar
1/4 c. shortening
1 tsp. salt
1 egg

In mixing bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups of the flour and yeast. Heat milk, sugar, shortening and salt just until warm. Stir until shortening almost melts, add to dry mixture; add egg. Beat on low speed for 1 minute and on high for 3 minutes. Stir in remaining flour for a soft dough, shape into a ball. Place in lightly greased bowl, turn once to grease surface. Cover. Let rise for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Punch down and take out on floured surface. Shape into roll, cover, let rise in warm place until double. Bake in preheated oven of 400 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
