CHOCOLATE OR CARAMEL CAKE 
5 eggs, separated
2 c. plain flour
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. oil
1 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla

CHOCOLATE ICING:

1 1/4 c. sugar
6 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 c. canned milk
1/4 c. butter
1 tsp. vanilla

CARAMEL ICING:

1 c. canned milk
1 c. sugar
1 stick butter

Beat egg whites until stiff; set aside. Beat sugar, butter, and oil. Add egg yolk, one at a time, beating after each. Mix flour and soda; pour a small amount of this into sugar and butter mixture; blend well. Add 1/2 of buttermilk, then rest of flour and buttermilk, then vanilla. Pour into 4 prepared cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

Icing: Cook over low heat; spread on warm cake.
