My mom made this for us back in the 70s and 80s and it was always a family favorite. I make it for my family now and then, too.

Thanks for reviews. I was wondering about diet coke & the chicken cooking time & temp.

My family really loved this. My husband doesn't like chicken all that much but this he liked.

This was delicious. I cooked 3 chicken breasts in Sweet Baby Ray's barbecue sauce and a coke and some onion. Some had said it was too soupy. I took out the chicken, shredded it and took out the sauce. I returned the chicken to the crockpot and added sauce until it was the right consistency and it was fantastic.

I will definitely use this recipe again. To thicken the sauce, I added instant potatoes at the end of the cook time. I made with - 3 large boneless/skinless chicken breasts, an 18 oz. bottle Kroger Original Honey Barbecue Sauce, 1 small white onion (sauteed the onion in oil & drained before adding to the crock pot) and half of a 12 oz. can of coke. Since the breasts were very large, I cut them in half before adding to the crock pot. Cooked for 6 1/2 hours, the breasts were done and sauce was thin. I added 3 tbsp. of Hungry Jack Instant Potatoes to thicken the sauce to the consistency I wanted. Delicious!

I have done this before & it came out very good & tasty for me. I cooked it on low overnight. I have used whole chicken & also drumsticks. It always comes out tender for me. You really don't need much liquid though or your sauce will be thin so the coke could be cut down a little bit.

I'm going to do this right after I post this.....don't have coke or root beer or Dr.Pepper.....Pepsi will have to do. It's 23 miles to the nearest store.....sooo. Sounds good! Sides will be cornbread and rice. Rate later!!

I think I will try it using bourbon instead of coke. I am trying to find a recipe for Bourbon Chicken that a local restaurant had.

Really people asking if you could use Pepsi instead think before you comment. Any cola or as I used lemonade.

Good stuff!
You could use any type chichen, but my family prefers breast. It may cost a bit more, but we like it. And I agree directions are pretty clear. Coke is a great addition, and choice of barbeque sauce is personal preference. I used Big Moe's, a NC favorite! Can serve whole pieces of chicken or shred for sandwiches, either is yummy!

I am trying this out now. The BBQ sauce I had on hand was Chipotle Key Lime BBQ flavored, so I switched out the coke for a small can of pineapple juice. I've done the same for a teriyaki style chicken and the sweetness of the pineapple juice is very good. If all goes well, I'll shred in about 7 hours to make pulled chicken sliders. Side of flavored rice and a veggie - yum!
