1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 c. applesauce
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. salt
1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 c. chopped nuts, optional

Cream shortening and sugar. Add applesauce and egg. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, allspice, salt, flour and soda. Blend into creamed mixture and mix well. Turn into greased loaf pan and bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 60 minutes.

CONFECTIONERS' GLAZE:

1 c. confectioners' sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 tbsp. cream or milk
