WALDORF ASTORIS CAKE AND
FROSTING
 
2 eggs
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. salt
1 c. buttermilk (or 1/4 c. vinegar and 3/4 c. milk, let set for 3 to 4 minutes)
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 oz. red food coloring
1 tbsp. cocoa
2 1/4 c. cake flour

Cream shortening and sugar. Add 1 egg at a time, whole and mix well. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring and add. Add vanilla to buttermilk and salt to flour. Alternate to mixture. Mix soda with vinegar and fold into mixture last. 9 by 13 inch greased and floured pan, 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes.

FROSTING:

1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/2 tsp. salt
Scant 1/2 c. milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. shortening

Put all ingredients into a bowl and beat for approximately 10 to 15 minutes until mixture is creamy and has a whitish color. HINT: A drop of green food coloring in the frosting will make for a great looking Christmas dessert.
