MOLASSES CAKE 
1 c. sugar
Shortening, size of a lg. egg
1 c. Grandma's molasses
1 c. buttermilk
1 level tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
2 1/2 c. plain flour
2 egg yolks
Pinch of salt

Cream shortening and sugar. Add other ingredients, 1 at a time. Mix well. Divide batter into 4 equal amounts and pour into greased and floured cake pans (the cake layers will be thin). Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees.

TOPPING:

2 egg whites
6 tbsp. sugar

Beat egg whites until stiff. Gradually add sugar. Beat until all sugar is dissolved. Ice cake and eat while it is warm.
