FROZEN FRUIT SALAD
1 pkg. (8 oz.) cream cheese
1 can (1 lb. 13 or 14 oz.) fruit cocktail in heavy syrup
1 jar (4 oz.) maraschino cherries or about 1/2 c. halved
1 pkg. (3 oz.) strawberry gelatin
1 c. syrup drained from canned fruit cocktail
1 env. (2 oz.) whipped dessert topping mix
2/3 c. salad dressing or mayonnaise (if possible use 1/3 c. of each)
2 c. snipped lg. marshmallows
1 c. coarsely broken California walnuts

Use: Nine inch square (about 2 inches deep) plastic refrigerator container with tight lid, or metal cake pan and foil to cover. Yield: Nine generous servings.

Put cream cheese in large mixer bowl; let stand at room temperature to soften. Drain fruit cocktail in strainer or colander, reserving syrup; also drain mandarin oranges, discarding syrup (unless you are one of the few who like its disconcerting flavor). Drain maraschino cherries saving juice for other use, if you like; cut cherries in half and make sure they are well drained.

Heat one cup of fruit cocktail syrup (add a little water if needed) to boiling in medium saucepan; stir in gelatin, when dissolved, cool by setting pan in a container of cold water, changing water two or three times, until gelatin is barely beginning to thicken.

Meanwhile, prepare the whipped dessert topping as package directs. Snip large marshmallows into about six pieces each, using kitchen shears dipped in hot water occasionally as you work.

Break up nuts. With electric mixer beat cream cheese at slow or medium speed until smooth; add salad dressing and mix smooth then beat in cooled gelatin mixture. Remove beaters and fold in whipped topping, mixing smooth. Add drained fruit cocktail, orange segments, marshmallows, cherries and nuts; fold gently with rubber scraper to mix well. Turn into freezer container; cover tightly, freeze.

To serve, some move the container of frozen to refrigerator a half hour before cutting for serving; others simply cut the squares into half or into three strips each, so they will come to comfortable eating consistency by the time you put them on plates and take them to the table.
