SLOVAK HALUSKY (DUMPLINGS)
2 c. flour
4 eggs, well beaten
1/4 c. water
1 tsp. salt

Combine and mix well all ingredients to form a soft sticky dough. Push 1/2 teaspoon off the edge of a plate or board into 3 to 4 quarts of rapidly boiling salted water. Boil 5 to 7 minutes. Drain.

Can be served buttered and sprinkled with parsley or in soups or stew. A very popular combination is to cut up a medium head of cabbage, cook and add to Halusky. In a separate pan brown enough butter for amount made and pour browned butter over combined Halusky and cabbage. Add salt and pepper to taste. Mix well and serve.

Salt, to taste
Mix well.
Push through grater into rapid boiling water and when it rises to top. It is done.

Serve with Bryndza cheese & chunky fried bacon/pork.

This is correctly Slovak. Same as my granny made except she used 1 egg and water as needed. You've got it right

This is very much like my recipe for dumpling soup! My family is from the Austrian/Slovakian area. When I was little, it was called Czechoslovakia. Lots of times we made the dough thinner and it makes the most delicious dumplings. If you make the dough with milk it makes it too tough. The water makes it just right! My mom and I always called it soul food! :-) I lost her almost 12 years ago and I still think of her when I make our dumpling soup!

This is the first recipe I've found that closely matches what my mother made. She was from the Martin area of Slovakia. I made Halusky a couple of days ago before seeing this website and used 3 c. of flour, 3 eggs, salt, vegetable oil, and water to suit for proper consistency. They turned out EXACTLY like mother's!

I am a first generation Slovak and this is how my family always made Halusky except we used milk instead of water. Oh and my family is from Bratislava.
