KENNEBECK TOAST 
2 c. whole wheat or sifted unbleached enriched white flour
4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
3 tbsp. butter
About 3/4 c. milk

Combine dry ingredients. Cut in shortening. Add milk to make a soft dough. Put dough on well floured surface. Fold it lightly 2 or 3 times. Roll thin, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and cut into squares.

Bake at 425 degrees on a buttered baking sheet, until brown about 10 minutes. While still warm, split squares and spread with butter and hot applesauce or apple butter.
