WALDORF ASTORIA CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 bottle food coloring
2 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. cocoa

Cream together shortening, sugar, and eggs. Add food coloring. Sift together flour, salt and cocoa. Add sifted ingredients alternately with 1 cup of buttermilk. Add 1 teaspoon of vanilla. Mix together in a cup, 1 tablespoon of vinegar and 1 teaspoon of baking soda. Let this foam, then add to the cake mixture; blend well. Bake in an 8-inch layer cake pan at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Remove and cool.

ICING:

3 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1/2 c. butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Cook flour and milk until thick, stirring constantly. Cool. Cream together sugar, butter, butter and vanilla. Add the cooled flour mixture and cream well. Frost Waldorf Astoria Cake and garnish with chopped walnuts.
