CHINESE PEPPER STEAK
1.5 lb. sirloin steak, sliced thinly
2 green bell peppers, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 yellow onion, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 can diced tomatoes, drained
2 cups water
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. garlic salt
1 tbsp. granulated sugar
2 tbsp. corn starch
4 tbsp. soy sauce

Heat oil in a large skillet until very hot. Add the meat and stir-fry until nicely browned. Add the onion, water, garlic salt, and ginger. Bring mixture to a boil, cover and cook for about 5 minutes. Add the bell peppers, cover, and cook about 5 more minutes, or until the peppers are tender. Add the tomatoes.

Combine the sugar, corn starch, and soy sauce in a bowl and whisk together until well combined. Add this mixture to the meat and pepper mixture and bring to a boil. Continue to cool, uncovered, until the sauce thickens.

Serve over steamed rice.

This recipe is great! The sauce tastes just like it does in the restaurant. I love to cook at home and this recipe is saved in my bookmarks. Thanks Frank

Would like to add my commendation to this one too. The recipe looks simple, and I had my doubts it was heavily enough spiced. But it ends up tasting nearly identical to what you can buy from many restaurants. I've started building up a cache of good chinese food recipes, and this is one of them.

Awesome! I literally just got done cooking and eating it and it was awesome! I used flour instead of corn starch because I didn't have any on hand, but it still turned out just as if I'd had in a restaurant!

Really good. I never knew this was a "Chinese restaurant" dish. It's something my mom always made. I haven't been able to find the right recipe, but this one is darn close. Everyone loved it. I'm happy with it. The only thing I did differently was use fresh garlic/ginger.

OMG this is so good. I am eating it right now and I love it. I used the low sodium soy sauce because my husband is on a restricted diet. He even said that it is delicious and is asking for seconds. I have tried so many chinese restaurants and this is even better than those and at least I know what is in it. Thanks Frank for the great recipe.

Love it! I made some alterations, and made it better, added 2 cans water chestnuts, and 2 broccoli crowns, both added 4 minutes before thickening, I think this adds a little more chinese restaurant feel to the dish. Also I doubled the sauce measurements, I love sauce, and it made my family happy. I also added 2 tablespoons cayenne pepper to add some spice. Try it, I know you will love it.

Excellent!! My mother used to buy box of pre-made peppered steak that you just add the steak and this tastes just like it but better because it is home-made. I didn't have 2 green peppers, so I used 1 red and 1 green. Will definitely make this again!!! Thanks!!
