CHINESE PEPPER STEAK
1.5 lb. sirloin steak, sliced thinly
2 green bell peppers, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 yellow onion, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 can diced tomatoes, drained
2 cups water
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. ground ginger
1 tsp. garlic salt
1 tbsp. granulated sugar
2 tbsp. corn starch
4 tbsp. soy sauce

Heat oil in a large skillet until very hot. Add the meat and stir-fry until nicely browned. Add the onion, water, garlic salt, and ginger. Bring mixture to a boil, cover and cook for about 5 minutes. Add the bell peppers, cover, and cook about 5 more minutes, or until the peppers are tender. Add the tomatoes.

Combine the sugar, corn starch, and soy sauce in a bowl and whisk together until well combined. Add this mixture to the meat and pepper mixture and bring to a boil. Continue to cool, uncovered, until the sauce thickens.

Serve over steamed rice.

Pepper steak is delicious and when I want a change, I use carrots instead of peppers and put it on noodles. Kind of like a pot roast. Delicious as well. Thanks very much for the recipe.

An addition to my earlier review. Simmer the meat for one hour in the water. Don't be afraid to add extra spices. I shake in a bunch of that Lawry's garlic salt when browning the meat and some pepper to. Use your imagination. As they say on TV, Cooking has no rules. YUM!

I have been using this as one of my go to recipes for a few years now and its way past time I rate it. Everyone in my family loves this dish! I make just a few changes. After I brown it, I actually simmer my sirloin in beef broth for 1 and a half hours. I don't like tough or chewy meat so this takes care of that, plus the beef broth gives it more flavor. Then I add all of the ingredients for the sauce, except I always double the sauce and cut back on the sugar a little. I love using the fire roasted tomatoes for this. After these changes I think this is a 5 star recipe!

I'm sorry to have to disagree with all of the wonderful reviews posted here but my family and I found this recipe to be nothing like good Chinese pepper steak. It was OK but totally bland. Neither my son nor my grandson liked it well enough to take the leftovers home and they usually jump at the chance. I'm going to try to rescue this dish from total oblivion later today.

This recipe is freakin awesome! I omitted the tomatoes, doubled the sauce and added a cup of water after the sauce thickened then let it cook down some more. This is almost IDENTICAL to our local Chinese takeout! I think if I wouldn't have browned the sauce as much it would have been a perfect match to takeout! Instead of slicing sirloin my local super center had round steak thinly sliced for stir fry. Worked great! This recipe is definitely a keeper!

Made this recipe a couple times in the past and the family loved it. The second time I left the tomatoes out and added thinly sliced carrots instead and to me was even better than original. Thanks frank for the great recipe, would have thought it was a lot more difficult to make.

Was very hesitant when searching for a Pepper Steak recipe and came across this one. Me and my family absolutely loved it. And no worries about what goes on when eating out; now we can have it fresh and tasty right at home. I still can't believe I found something so good being as picky as I am. Thanks for this recipe....

I will change just one thing in the future and that is instead of the diced tomatoes I will add 1/4 cup of tomato sauce. I prefer not to bite into tomato but I think it does need that tomato flavor. Because of using another liquid I will then decrease the water by 1/4 cup.

This does taste like Pepper Steak from a Chinese Restaurant.

Just made this recipe for dinner... truly enjoyed by ALL! Had some left over corn on the cob cut the kernels off and added about 1 cup for a little added crunch - just as good as baby corn and topped with fried wonton strips... EZ Quick Cook & Yummy to the Tummy :)

Frank I must say I was skeptical because it was to easy to make. But now I must say it is better than any restaurant. Thanks Frank!
