FRIED BOLOGNA SANDWICH | |
This recipe is a tribute to the great bologna sandwiches to be found in WALDO, OHIO. Every citizen of the Buckeye State knows that they must make a pilgrimage to Waldo at least once in their lifetime. Be sure to let me know how this recipe works out for you. God Bless all who prepare our food. bologna slices bread slices your favorite spices and condiments This recipe utilizes a George Foreman style grill. The bologna is placed on a preheated grill and is cooked at a medium setting. (Modern GF grills have a sliding thermostat). If you have cooked bacon on your GF grill, you will want to use a higher heat setting for the bologna. You will want the bologna to pick up some well defined grill marks and be thoroughly heated. Bologna is available in a wide variety of thicknesses and flavorings. Any style bologna will make a terrific fried bologna sandwich. Ask your butcher to prepare bologna sliced as much as 1/8th of an inch. If your bologna is a typical supermarket variety, it can actually be rather bland. Consider sprinkling your favorite spices on the finished sandwich. I like Mrs. Dash but you might want to try Garlic Salt or Chili Powder or even McCormick's Grill Mates Mesquite seasoning. I like a small amount of thoroughly diced raw onion; especially if using the traditional mustard topping. My favorite is peanut butter on both pieces of bread. Use your family's favorite bread and toast it lightly while the bologna is frying. Allow the bologna and the bread to cool thoroughly before beginning to assemble the sandwich. The magic of this recipe is that by using your GF grill, the bologna stays FLAT. Anyone who has tried to cook bologna in a frying pan knows that even the best bologna will bubble up so severely that it will not cook evenly. Enjoy! Submitted by: John R. Freeman |
