MERINGUES 
1/2 c. egg whites (4 eggs)
1 1/3 c. granulated sugar (sifted)
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. lemon peel (grated)
Food coloring or nonpareils

Whip egg whites with salt until hard peaks form. Add sugar gradually; whip for 5 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients. Put food coloring to the mixture if desired.

Prepare a cookie sheet with waxed paper. Drop mixture with a spoon or using a baker's bag. Sprinkle each one with nonpareils. Bake at 275 degrees for 25-30 minutes.
