CHOCOLATE CHIP OATMEAL COOKIES 
3/4 c. white sugar
3/4 c. brown sugar
1 c. shortening
1 egg
1 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in 1 tbsp. hot water
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 pkg. chocolate chips
2 1/4 c. oatmeal
1 1/2 c. flour
Nuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix ingredients together. Drop by spoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden brown. Makes about 4 dozen.
