SWEET POTATO AND APPLE CASSEROLE
4 med. sweet potatoes
4-5 red apples
1 c. white sugar
1/2 c. brown sugar
1 stick butter
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg

Parboil sweet potatoes until barely tender. Cut into round circles 1/3 - 1/2 inch thick. Cool sweet potatoes. Peel apples, cut into 1/2 inch slices (round or lengthwise). Place apples into 1/2 cup water. Bring to boil - drain apples.

Grease casserole dish (butter). Layer sweet potatoes and apples alternating. Next blend sugars (brown and white), butter, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cook gently until it begins to thicken slightly. Pour sugar syrup mixture over layered apples and sweet potatoes.

Place in 350 degree oven and bake for 30 minutes or until desired browning. Serves 8-10. Optional: Sprinkle pecan halves over top of casserole.

Made with 1/4 tsp ground cloves instead of nutmeg, since I was out, turned out amazing. It got great feedback at Thanksgiving. I didn't actually grease the dish and worked out nicely.
