JEWEL COOKIES 
1 c. butter, softened
1 1/2 c. sifted powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/4 tsp. salt

Cream butter, sugar and vanilla. Beat in egg. Sift together dry ingredients. Gradually stir into cream mixture. Mix well. Chill 1 hour. Roll out 1/4 inch. Cut out with your favorite cookie cutter. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet 10 minutes in 375 degree oven until lightly browned. May be decorated with colored sugar to fit the season.
