 Paula Wilkinson (Texas) says:
This cake is all-time favorite. Our recipe, used in four generations of bakers, uses 3/4 cup or 6 heaping tablespoons of cocoa. And the new dark chocolate cocoa makes it better than ever!

 Shasta McCoy (Pennsylvania) replies:
No you can't. I've used it for substitutions alot, even in cupcakes. It's really yummy and moist.

No. Mayo is eggs and oil. That's why we don't use salad dressing.

How can you taste mayo with all the other ingredients. It's for texture.

I have never thought of using mayonnaise in baking before. But, it is ready available items in my pantry and I do not have to go buy extra stuff. I was in the mood for making chocolate cake and this recipe came out handy. Turned out wonderful very rich and dark and I will definitely make this cake again!

This is similar to my grandmothers mayonnaise cake we are trying to recreate by a combination of memory and trial and error. Only difference seems to be replacing the vanilla with a shot glass of Jim Beam whiskey and adding a cup of chopped pecans.

This was the cake my mom made when we were growing up and she always frosted it with chocolate frosting. I can remember many times of my brothers and I putting a piece in a glass and covering it with milk. It was sooo good. My one brother and his sons still do that today. Great cake!

Loved it loved it loved it. I frosted with a light, whipped peanut butter flavored frosting for a party where all desserts had popular candy themes (ours was peanut butter cup). It was dense, moist and delicious. Exactly what we wanted! Thank you!

Excellent cake & done with little effort. I do use 3/4 cup of cocoa as I like the chocolate taste & do a boiled frosting or peanut butter cream frosting.

I have made this recipe for over 30 years and it's the greatest. My sister's birthday is March 5th and she requests it every year.

This is the cake my Mother always made for my birthday. She made this delicious by adding 7 heaping Tbsp. of cocoa for I am a chocoholic. She frosted it with her special butter cream frosting of her own recipe. Thanks Mom for teaching me to make this cake. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

Wonderful Cake! Have made it many times in the past but this time instead of adding 1/2 cup cocoa, I added about a little over a 1/4 cup and some dark rich pudding mix! It came out nice and moist and liked it a lot!

 Sybil Kay (Indiana) replies:
I wish I'd read this before making it. I have a box of York pudding mix I could have used for the peppermint flavor.

 Peg Lokay (New York) says:
This would have been wonderful but the baking powder was not included. I did not think of it till the cake did not rise.

 Deb (Colorado) replies:
It is supposed to be a dense cake! No leaveners needed.
 #190685
 Sybil Kay (Indiana) replies:
Hey! It takes soda. Did you use that?
 #190707
 Sybil Kay (Indiana) replies:
The soda is the leavening agent in this cake. If you didn't use the soda your cake didn't rise. Some recipes take soda instead of baking powder. try again. Good luck.
