1 c. flour
3/4 c. sugar
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 c. shortening
1 egg
3/4 c. applesauce
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/4 tsp. cloves
1/4 tsp. allspice

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift dry ingredients together and place in mixing bowl. Add shortening and 1/2 of the applesauce and mix well. Add remainder of applesauce and egg and mix well. Pour batter into greased 8 x 8 inch cake pan. Bake for 35 minutes.

FROSTING:

1 c. brown sugar
1 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 c. half and half

Boil ingredients for 5 minutes, until soft boil.
