1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. applesauce, pineapple sauce, etc.
2 tsp. baking soda dissolved in sm. amt. of hot water
2 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. salt
2 c. flour
1 c. raisins

Combine sugar and shortening; stir in eggs; add soda and water to mixture. Add applesauce; stir in salt and spices; stir in flour, add raisins. Bake at 350 degrees in greased, regular size cake pan for 35 to 45 minutes (watch for cake to separate from pan sides). Cake can be frosted with a cream cheese type frosting; very good without. Optional: add 1/2 cup chopped nuts to the batter with the raisins.
