BUTTERSCOTCH COOKIES 
2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. English or black walnuts
1 c. shortening
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. dates (optional)
4 c. flour

Mix first 4 ingredients. Sift baking soda, cream of tartar and flour. Add shortening to flour mixture and mix well. Form into rolls on waxed paper. Let stand overnight in a cool place. Cut into slices and bake in quick oven (400 or 375 F.) 7 to 10 minutes, depending on thickness.
