1 gallon of water. Add 1 cup of lime. Slice cucumbers, soak overnight. Next day drain; wash real good. Soak 2 hours in 1 gallon of water with 1 cup of salt. Drain real good; wash good, soak in clean water 4 hours. Drain. Add 2 ounces of powdered alum to 1 gallon of water, bring to a boil. Drain wash in hot water real good. Pour over syrup which is made of 10 pounds plus 4 cups of sugar, 1 gallon 3 pints of vinegar and 3 tablespoons of pickling spice; bring to a boil. Pack in jars and seal. 1/2 bushel cucumbers makes 18 quarts.
