VINEGAR COBBLER 
4 c. water
2 c. sugar
1/2 c. white vinegar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tbsp. butter

Into a large baking dish or cobbler pan, put water, vinegar and 1 cup sugar. Place on low heat and let simmer while you roll out cobbler dough into thin and narrow strips. Stir in vanilla. Lay dough in pan in criss-cross layers, sprinkling remaining 1 cup of sugar on each layer as it is placed in pan. Dot each layer and top with butter. Bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees.

COBBLER DOUGH:

2 c. flour
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
3/4 c. shortening
Cold water to make stiff dough

Sift and measure flour. Sift flour, salt and baking powder together 3 times. Cut in shortening with edge of spoon then crumble with tips of fingers. Pour water in slowly while cutting again with edge of spoon. Add just enough water to make a stiff dough. Knead on floured board very lightly and for only a few seconds. Roll out and cut into strips.

This is the most similar with regard to ingredients that my grandmother taught me to make, of course at her age of almost 100 she never measured anything. But we would use Apple Cider Vinegar instead of White. It gives it a much better taste, some people would swear they were eating apple cobbler but couldn't find the apples. My grandmother called it "Poor Boy Pie" because during the depression it was a desert that could be made with just your basic staples. No one could afford fresh fruit to make real apple pie, unless you had your own tree. However with 7 kids, she made a much larger batch than listed. LOL

Thabk you soooo much for this recipe. My grandmother use to make this when I was a child. She passed away before I had a chance to get it from her. I have looked for many years trying to find it. The closest I came was something called a vinegar pie and it was not quite the same as hers. I made it for my family and they were blown away. Such an easy recipe too. This really brought back wonderful memories of my childhood. Again, thank you!!!
